Automation Controls Engineer

This position will support and identify upgrades and deficiencies for all existing automation that resides on the production floor. Additionally, this position will identify, research, and analyze new automation opportunities that will enhance and advance the capabilities of the company.

  • Lead and assist in automated start-up system, and coordinate with suppliers and contractors to accomplish automation objectives and goals.
  • Develop simulation and testing (of automation) programs where required and beneficial to demonstrate the benefits of newly developed capabilities.
  • Design and develop control systems and specifications that interface with the company’s information systems.
  • Test, maintain, and modify (as required) existing automation systems.
  • Working collaboratively with Manufacturing Engineers, Industrial Engineers, Purchasing and other internal staff for new and replacement equipment.
  • Ability to apply Lean Manufacturing Practices and Procedures toward implementation of new project layouts.
  • Conduct and instructing Maintenance, Engineering, and Operators in new processes and procedures of automated equipment.
  • Write strong Project Plans to accomplish projects on time within cost constrains that will develop and demonstrate leadership skills.
  • Program controls and PLC’s, and troubleshoot controls and robot programs and other production automation.
  • Understanding and ensuring compliance with the health and safety regulations and quality standards (OSHA, NFPA 70E, NFPA 79, NEC, ISO 13849-1;EN 954-1)
  • Reseach, price, and purchase automation equipment; (PLC’s, Drives, Sensors, Misc. Controls)
  • Developing SCADA, HMI, and PLC Programs from scratch. (Rslogix 500, Rslogix 5000, FactoryTalk View, Wonderware Intouch, Motion, Drives.)
  • Create Electrical Drawings for in-house and modified systems. (Solidworks Electrical 2D)


  • A minimum of an Associate's degree (A.A./A.S.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school and a minimum of three years of related experience; a Bachelor's degree is preferred. Must have a proven track record in leading projects and developing new automation for machines and processes to provide detailed documentation upon project completion.
  • Must have knowledge of PLC logic and practical experience in programming with PLC’s that may include but not limited to: Rockwell (Allen Bradley), Siemens, etc. Additional experience of HMI or SCADA programming and configuration of FactoryTalk,Wonderware, Rockwell, Siemens, or similar software packages are desirable.

    Panel design and layout, bill of materials, and wiring schematic capabilities are expected with this position. The candidate must have experience reading and red-lining PI&D drawings.

  • Must be able to work at an expert level with CAD, computers, and in Microsoft Project. Ability to work at a proficient level with Microsoft Word and Excel and with large format printer. Knowledge of AS400 helpful.
